Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism
Every year the Dies Natalis committee organizes a symposium on Human Rights to celebrate the anniversary of SIB. The theme of this 68th Dies Natalis is “Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism”. With tensions rising in the Middle-East and threats of terrorism looming more than ever we will try to illuminate the many different perspectives which can be had on this subject, covering both the local and the global aspects and deal with varied topics which include Jihadist fighters and cyberterrorism. Some of the questions we will try to get answers to include: What will terrorism in the future look like and how will government organizations have to
anticipate on them? What implications do technological advancements have on
terrorism? And: What does the rise of Global Jihadism mean for us in Europe?
Through both plenary lectures and intensive masterclasses we will try to give you a better understanding of the subject and more of a grasp on the true threats of terrorism. The conference will consist of three plenary lectures and two rounds of masterclasses, finished by a debate. Masterclass topics are security, drones, the role of international media in Modern Warfare, the reality of Modern Warfare, peace & conflict studies, and the safety of the Netherlands. Dick Schoof, the National coordinator for counter-terrorism (NCTV), Glenn Schoen and Rear Admiral Pieter Bindt, the director Dutch Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIVD) will be responsible for the plenary lecturers.
Speakers for the masterclasses will be: Jaap-Henk Hoepman (Associate Professor Privacy & Security RU Nijmegen), Eric Luiijf MSc (Principal Consultant TNO), Berto Jongman (Moderator), Dick Oey CCP (Owner of Enigma Solutions), Carla Huisman (Advisor Safety & Security Gemeente Groningen), and Dr. Jorrit Kamminga (Senior Associate Fellow at the Clingendael Institute).
